Morrisons Regional Distribution Centre
The Morrisons Regional Distribution Centre (RDC) in Bridgwater is vital cog of the Morrisons supply chain and gives flexibility in how they move products from suppliers to customers and from food manufacturing sites to their stores.
The Morrisons RDC in Bridgwater delivers greater transport efficiency to the Morrisons network while working to make Bridgwater one of the greenest sites ever built. Some of the environmentally friendly features include extensive coverage of solar panels, rain water recycling, LED lights that dim when no movement is detected and recycling across all areas of the site.
The Morrisons RDC is an exemplar of low carbon, sustainable design, using measures such as the use of ammonia for refrigeration rather than conventional options, the introduction of daylight in the bulk warehouse and other spaces to reduce the need for artificial lighting and high levels air tightness to avoid unnecessary heat loss from heated spaces.
The RDC and associated facilities comprise 767,500 fs. (71,303 ms.) of floorspace on a site of 59.1 acres (23.9 Ha.) located to the north east of Bridgwater. The western boundary of the site is formed by the main Penzance to Bristol railway line and the eastern boundary by the M5 motorway, from which the site can be accessed from junction 23. Close by, with a frontage to the A38 Bristol Road, is the proposed Produce Facility which involves the demolition of two of three existing and interlinked warehouses and the refurbishment and extension (amounting to 215,275 fs./ 20,000 ms.) of the remaining warehouse.
The intention is to create a family of buildings, with The Willow Man, "the Angel of the South" located to the south of the site and adjacent to the M5 motorway. This has been the inspiration for the design concept of a "willow weave" of cladding panels employing a natural palette of willow colours.
When operational around Autumn 2011, Morrisons anticipate that Bridgwater will be one of the most energy efficient distribution centres in Europe, employing some 1,400 staff on site.
